Independent restaurants deserve the effortless ordering that guests get at big chains, without the price and complexity of enterprise restaurant systems. Univolute and our sister company Unitary Tech built a platform to give them exactly that. It runs every day at Fusion Feast Bistro, a café and bistro in Malkapur, Maharashtra: guests scan a QR code at the table, browse a live menu and order in seconds, while the team runs the menu, offers and sales from one dashboard.
The problem with the usual options
Independent restaurants fall between two stools. Enterprise point-of-sale contracts are built and priced for chains, and a simple website can't take an order. The daily frustrations are familiar to any owner:
- Changing the menu needs a developer. A new price or a sold-out dish means waiting for a technical update, so the website and the printed menu soon disagree.
- Orders wait for a free waiter. At peak times, taking orders becomes the bottleneck and tables turn more slowly.
- Nobody really knows what sells. Bestsellers are a matter of feel, and the day's takings are added up by hand after closing.
- Promotions are messy. Discount codes are handed out informally, applied inconsistently and impossible to measure.
How we approached it
The platform had two audiences. Guests should be able to order without friction: nothing to install and no account to create. Staff should be able to run everything themselves without ever calling a developer. And because the system takes orders and sets prices, it had to be secure and dependable from day one rather than patched later.
What we built
Ordering from the table
Guests scan the table's QR code, browse the full menu with photos and options and place their order, with no app to download and no need to catch anyone's eye. They can order as guests in seconds, or sign in with Google or their phone number to keep a history of their orders.
A menu staff control
Dishes, prices, photos and availability are changed from the dashboard and reach every guest's phone within minutes. Marking a dish sold out for the night takes one tap.
Offers with limits built in
Staff create percentage or flat discount codes with a minimum spend and a maximum saving, then switch them on or off the same afternoon.
Sales at a glance
The dashboard shows revenue, number of orders and average order value for any period, and ranks the bestsellers automatically.
Reviews and enquiries
Guests can leave a review or send an enquiry straight from the website, and every submission is checked before it's stored.
Secure and ready to grow
Order totals are always calculated and checked by the system, never by the guest's phone, and automated abuse is stopped before it reaches the restaurant. The platform is built so that a packed Saturday night costs roughly the same to run as a quiet Tuesday afternoon.
What changed at Fusion Feast Bistro
- The menu is always right. Updating a price is an everyday job for staff, not a developer task, and the website matches the printed menu.
- Quicker service when it's busy. Guests order from the table, which frees staff to focus on food and hospitality at peak times.
- Decisions backed by numbers. Bestsellers are measured, not guessed, and the day's takings add themselves up.
- Offers when they're needed. A promotion can be launched, capped and ended in a single afternoon.
- Room to grow. More guests don't mean a matching rise in running costs.
Why it matters to us
Good software shouldn't be reserved for restaurant chains. Working as one team with Unitary Tech, we brought the same engineering standards we'd apply to a large system, sized and priced for a business that counts its scale in tables rather than cities.
